Established in 1921, Calliope is located in north east Victoria 4km west of the township of Rutherglen. The Rutherglen Winegrowing Region is famous for its fortified wines, especially Muscat, and also for full bodied red wines. The old vines at Calliope are not irrigated and as a result, yields are low - about one tonne to the acre. Consequently the fruit from this vineyard produces intensely flavoured wines, but in rather small quantities. Principal red varieties grown are Shiraz and Grenache. There are also small plantings of the rare Mondeuse and Cinsaut, which are used to make the table wines. The grapes used to make the Rutherglen wines are hand picked, processed in open fermenters and generally handled using traditional methods that have not changed since the winery was first built. The wines are individualistic with a strong regional flavour.

buller calliope shiraz 2004

The Calliope Shiraz is truly a handcrafted wine. After harvest the wine is crushed into open vat fermenters, where the cap is plunged by hand to maximise the the extraction of colour, before basket pressing. The wine spend 24 months in new and 1 year old American Oak puncheons and receives minimal filtration. The result is an incredibly powerful Shiraz boasting colossal aromatics, masses of concentrated fruit and long grainy tannins. A true regional icon, the depth of fruit an immense structure of the wine suggest long term cellaring potential.
