The Ballast Stone winery was established in 2001 at Currency Creek. Currency Creek lies 6 km north of Goolwa on the road to Strathalbyn. Situated only 4 km from the Southern ocean and adjacent to Lake Alexandrina, the cool maritime climate allows for a longer and milder growing season without the temperature extremes experienced in other regions. These conditions produce consistent grape yields with wines of outstanding varietal definition and lift. Since buying land in the Currency Creek Region 8 years ago, the Shaw's have planted over 1000 acres to vine.Currency Creek is known for its' Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. When considering appointing a winemaker Ballast Stone wines went looking for a talented and experienced "hands-on" winemaker with a proven track record. All these criteria were met when John Loxton joined the team. He brought with him over 30 years experience in the wine industry bringing a wealth of knowledge in how to build and produce award winning wines. |
